Study Collections

The Study Collections consist of reference tools, such as the Decimal Index of the Art of the Low Countries, scholarly compilations based on a particular research interest such as the Weitzmann Archive, and microfiche collections documenting photo archives such as Archivi Alinari.

WAYNE ANDREWS COLLECTION
Photographs of American architecture (18th – 20th C.) taken by the photographer Wayne Andrews. The collection includes photographs of European buildings that influenced or were influenced by American architects.

JAMES AUSTIN COLLECTION
Photographs of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and sculpture taken by the photographer James Austin. The collection includes photographs of 18th & 19th C. architecture in Paris, Greek temples and theaters in Sicily & Paestum.

BARTSCH COLLECTION
Photographs of 15th - 17th century German, Italian and Dutch prints described in Adam von Bartsch's catalogue Le Peintre-Graveur (Vienna, 1803-21). The collection includes prints from the British and Metropolitan Museums and other collections not included in the original Bartsch volumes.

ANANDA COOMARASWAMY COLLECTION
Photographs of architecture, painting, sculpture drawings and minor arts of India and Southeast Asia. The photographs are part of Princeton’s collection of materials, relating to Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, which were donated to the Bollingen Foundation by Dona Luisa Coomaraswamy. The collection also contains documentary photographs depicting labor and leisure activities indigenous to the region. [Please note: this collection is now at Princeton University Library]

COURTAULD INSTITUTE ARCHIVES
Illustrations selected from the photographic surveys of Britain and Europe undertaken by the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. The collection includes reproductions of the following: Cathedrals and monastic buildings in British Isles Medieval architecture and sculpture in Europe 15th & 16th century sculpture in Italy Late 18th & 19th century sculpture in British Isles

Postcard size photographs, issued by the Decimal Index of Art of Low Countries, of Dutch and Flemish paintings and drawings filed by subject according to the ICONCLASS iconographic classification system.

ALISON FRANTZ COLLECTION
A selection of photographs of archaic and classical Greek art and architecture taken by the photographer and Late Antique scholar Alison Frantz. Firestone Library maintains the rest of this collection.

ALBERT M. FRIEND COLLECTION
Photographs and negatives of manuscripts and metalwork, compiled by the medievalist Albert M. friend, Jr. (Class of 1915).

GERNSHEIM COLLECTION
A selection of photographs, taken by Walter Gernsheim for his Corpus Photographicum of 16th - 18th century Italian architectural drawings.

HISTORIC PHOTOGRAPHS COLLECTION
Photographs of ancient monuments and scenes of contemporary life taken in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century by well-known photographers

I TATTI COLLECTION
Postcard sized reproductions of Bernard Berenson's photographic archive of Italian Renaissance painting at the Villa I Tatti in Florence. Photographs are organized by artist name.

KLAUDER - DAY COLLECTION
Thirty scrapbooks containing images of American and European architecture and architectural details compiled by the architects.

LO ARCHIVE
Historic photographs of the Buddhist cave temples in Dunhuang, China. The nearly 500 caves preserve about 2,000 sculptures and 45,000 square meters of wall paintings that range in date from the fourth to the thirteenth century a.d.

A. SHELDON PENNOYER COLLECTION
British, French and US military photographs of the allied advance at the end of World War II. US Capt. Pennoyer, member of the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Subcommission of the Allied Commission, collected the photographs, reports, and correspondence. The commission was directed Ernst T. Dewald (Class of 1916), professor in the Department of Art and Archaeology and director (1946-1960) of the Princeton Art Museum. Collection includes Pennoyer’s personal photos documenting the damage and subsequent restoration of artistic monuments in Italy.

GEORGE ROWLEY COLLECTIONS
Photographs from a study of piazza space and church interiors of seventeenth century Rome by George Rowley, member of the faculty of the Department of Art & Archaeology. Photographs of works by the Lorenzetti published in Rowley’s, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Princeton, 1958.

RICHARD STILLWELL COLLECTION
Photographs from the 1930’s, of various ancient sites, including Corinth, visited by Stillwell, Class of 1921, Professor of Art & Archaeology 1926-1959.

W. FREDERICK STOHLMAN COLLECTION
Photographs of medieval enamel and metal liturgical objects, book covers, crosses/crucifixes etc., collected by William Frederick Stohlman Class of 1909, GS’24.

HOMER A. THOMPSON COLLECTION
Mounted photographs, maps, and plans from the Agora excavations in Athens from the 1930’s through the 1960’s, including some material added in later years. The photos document the excavations, artifacts, and reconstruction of the ancient marketplace. The plans record individual monuments as well as the overall architectural scheme of the area.

WARBURG INSTITUTE MEDALS COLLECTION
A selection of photographs of medals in the cabinets of the British, Victoria & Albert, Fitzwilliam, and Ashmolean museums compiled by the Warburg Institute, University of London.

KURT WEITZMANN ARCHIVE
Photographs of Greek manuscripts, Latin manuscripts and ancient book illumination compiled by Kurt Weitzmann, member of the faculty of the Department of Art & Archaeology and the Institute for Advanced Studies (1935-1993).

HELEN WOODRUFF COLLECTION
Photographs of medieval enamel and metal liturgical objects, book covers, crosses/crucifixes from various collections arranged by country and city. Helen Woodruff, Director of the Index of Christian Art, 1933-1942, compiled the collection.
