Description

Fragment of a coufic [Digitizer's note: "Kufic"] inscription - probably a funerary stela [Digitizer's note: "stele"], carefully cut in dimensions .35 x .25 (thickness .075), and reused on reverse for a greek [sic] funerary inscription. White marble.
Reused as a cover for a well in late pavement.

1.) Coufic. Perhaps the right angle, on the bottom: two perpendicular lines of well carved floral coufic, and, in the middle, two perpendicular decorative strips, one being decorated with a vase, the other with triangles tight one to the other, probably stylized ivy leaves. Broken on tow [sic] sides. Scale [of sketch]: 1/5

2.) Greek. On the reverse side of the stone, complete greek [sic] funerary inscription. Badly damaged in the center of the stone, by humidity from the wall. Reading incomplete, and, in other places, dubious. Height of letters: .034. Regular lines. Late but beautifully letters [sic]. light carving. ligatures.
