Description

Mosaic pavement of corridor in front of apse. Geometric panels. Field pattern composed of an interlace of two strands forming and linking circles, ovals, and squares, each enclosing a separate design. Interlace outlined in black, its strands: a) dark grey shading to white, and b) dark red shading to white. Circles and ovals filled with white, the circles containing a quatrefoil composed of four separate petals; the ovals containing an indented lozenge; colors of both patterns, dark grey, dark red, light brown, pink, and white. Squares composed of one row of white, four rows of pale yellow, two of light brown, one of dark grey, and one of black, around a center containing a varied design: chevrons, interlaces, rainbows, meanders, checkerboards, rectangular cubes in perspective, triangles, diamonds, interlacing squares, crosses, etc. Colors used throughout in various combinations: black, dark grey shading to white, light brown, dark red shading to white. Ground, pale yellow. indented triangles and diamonds on this ground outlined in dark grey and filled with light grey and white, or dark red, light brown, pink, and white, both have a dark grey or black tessera in center.
