Apsidal construction "Martyrion"

H. 1.67m W. 2.97m Animal mosaic floor. Sheep in lower left corner: body outlined in violet except for upper forepart of right foreleg and back of wrist of left foreleg; contours of body, neck and jaw outlined in brown-yellow shading off to light gray-violet with white highlights; right ear brown-yellow; left ear light gray-violet; eye white with black pupil and outlined in black; nose indicated by a single black tessera; interior of lower jaw brown-yellow. Fragment of bird above: top lines of tail black, underlines violet; legs and feet and outline of underparts violet; underparts shade from light yellow to white flecked with black; lower edge of wing black. Bear: upper jaw, head, left ear, back, upper half of tail, back of left hind leg, front of right hind leg and left foreleg outlined in dark gray; lower jaw, right ear, upper part of lower half of tail, back of right hind leg and paw and left foreleg and paw outlined in black; body largely destroyed, but upper part of rump shows dark yellow-brown shading to red and light yellow-brown; head, neck, ears and lower jaw dark yellow-brown at edges shading to light gray-violet with white highlights and flecks of black; hair on face dark gray; left ear has dark gray center; tongue red; eye white with black pupil and outlined in black; object above nose outlined in dark yellow-brown at left and dark gray at right, shading to light yellow-gray and white; foreparts of legs light gray-yellow shading to brown-yellow and dark gray and flecked with black; white highlights in left hind leg; bushy lower half of tail composed of brown-yellow, dark gray, black and violet strands. Horse: crown of head, upper part of ear, neck, back, inner part of right foreleg and hindleg and bottoms of hooves outlined in black; lower edge of ear and face, nose, mouth, belly, foreparts of hind legs and left foreleg outlined in violet; lower jaw, back of left forefoot and front of right forefoot outlined in dark gray; hair on head black; edges of head pink shading to light yellow and yellow-gray, with white highlights; lower jaw pink; eye white with black pupil and outlined in black; neck violet at edges, shading to light red, pink and light yellow at center; upper contour of flank indicated by a broad, dark gray line shading to dark gray-brown, light gray-brown; bottom of flank light red shading to dark gray brown and light gray-brown; left side of flank light red, with white highlight in center of flank; edges of hindquarters light red shading to gray and gray-yellow; rump gray-brown at outer edge, shading to yellow-gray and light green-gray with white highlight; little of tail preserved, but was apparently outlined in black, shading to dark gray-brown and red flecked with black; legs light yellow shading to pink, light red and violet with shadows in dark gray. Flora and landscape: rosettes bordered in red shading to pinkish yellow and white with single black tessera at center; smaller flowers have sides and stems of dark green, top red shading to pink and white; hill at upper center has crest yellow-brown shading to gray-yellow, light gray-yellow and white; left slope outlined in dark gray-green shading to yellow-gray flecked with pink and dark yellow-brown with white highlights to right; right slope yellow-gray at top, growing somewhat darker at extreme right and shading off to light red, pink, light yellow and yellow-gray with white highlights; base of hill yellow-gray with black valley above center; outer foliage of trees light yellow-gray, inner foliage black flecked with red; hill in lower right corner has slope brown-gray shading to light brown-gray; valley below black with white highlights above and at sides; highlights at sides shade to light yellow, brown-gray to grayish yellow at left base and dark brown-gray at right; contour of slope at upper right red; outer foliage of trees brown-gray; interior foliage black flecked with white and yellow.
