Apsidal construction "Martyrion"

H. 2.58 W. 1.945 Animal mosaic floor. Elephant: outlines of body, tusks, and ears, black and dark grey; modelling in dark brown-grey and muddy brown; eye outlined in black, the pupil a single black tessera surrounded by yellow and white tusks, grey-brown with long white highlight; nozzle of trunk filled with dark and light red, light pink, and black. To left, above, bird: head and outlines of back and wing, black; head flecked with white; wing and body, light brown, light pink, yellow, white, with black flecks; legs, grey, the right one black above the joint. Above, to left, large inverted goose (badly damaged): outline of back and wing, dark grey with light pink and yellow tesserae above line of wing; neck modelled in dark grey, grey-brown, light yellow and light brown with line of dark red on each side; body modelled in light brown with touches of pink and orange-brown, tan, light yellow and white; leg, dark brown, black above joint. Lion: outlines in light and dark grey and black; body, brown, dull pink, medium and light yellow; mane, outlined in black with strands of dark red, brown, medium and light yellow; nose indicated by pink, dark red, brown; mouth, red with white flecks. In background: a) single heartshaped petals shading dark red, pink and yellow, to white with dark grey leaves and stem; b) rosettes dark red shading to white with single dark grey tessera in center.
