Description
Room C3. H. 2.34 W. 3.50. Narkisos II. Inscribed. Outer border the same as for Panel B. Border of central panels, black with continuous series of yellow indented diamonds. Identical side-panels bordered in white, green-grey, and black enclosing candelabra against a red ground. Both candelabra modelled in the same color scheme, the deep shadows, black, dark grey, red, grading through dark ochre and yellow-grey to yellow and white highlights. Emblema surrounded by a border of flowering acanthus laid in pairs top to top, with putto heads at regular intervals; the ground, black, the border, dark ochre. The modelling is in a great variety of colors with touches of brilliant glass tesserae. Putto faces modelled with violet and grey shadows, sometimes touched with green, grading through pink flesh tones to white; noses, eyes, mouths indicated by red or violet; each head wears a leafy cap with shadows in grey, violet, or dark green; edges of upturned leaves outlined in white or yellow glass, the underside in dark ochre shadow or with brilliant orange, yellow, green, or dark blue glass tesserae; each head has under its chin a leaf of various colors such: a) violet and light red: b) violet-red shadow with light green and orange glass; c) dark blue and light yellow glass; d) dark and light green glass; the outlines touched with white. The flowering acanthus with leafy calixes enclose at top and bottom of the border, a jewel, and at the sides, a rosette; modelling in dark and light grey-greens with broad white highlights; the outturned leaves with outlines touched with white are shadowed in dark violet-red and light red; leafy base of many colors, dark red, grey, violet-red, or dark blue glass; ring at base of each plant white, yellow, and ochre, or white and orange glass; stems of flowers dark grey or grey-green; flowers, a) white with yellow glass center; b) yellow glass, ochre, white; c) white and pink with orange and green glass; jewels black, ochre, or violet-red with yellow, orange, and green glass set against a quatrefoil of bright blue glass and dark grey; the rosettes have white petals with bright blue glass at the tips. Emblema bordered in black. Echo: tunic, light yellow glass tesserae with dark ochre folds and the deep shadows black and grey-violet; across skirt, band of light green glass tesserae that changes to dark blue glass in the shadow; boots, orange-yellow with highlights white and light yellow glass; shadows from light brown-grey to black; cast shadow, dark grey; flesh modelled in violet pinks with grey-violet shadow; staff, violet-red with dark blue and blue tesserae at top; garment fold of dark green glass on shoulder to right, violet-red and violet with fillet of light green and yellow glass with white highlight. Pedestal to left: grey shadows with violet-pink in the light areas. Narkisos: modelling of the flesh in ruddy tones with light pink highlights and shadows violet, green-grey, ochre and brown, dark red and violet-red; features indicated by violet-red; deep shadow on the neck grey-violet and grey-green with a touch of black right under the chin, and a white highlight; hair, black; hat, green-brown, violet-red, and black, with white highlights and pale green shadow under brim; mantle on shoulder to right, bright green, orange, and yellow glass with white highlights and violet-red and black shadows; strap across chest, bright blue glass and black; broadsword, yellow glass on hilt; blade, ochre with black shadow and long white highlight; space between the sword and body of Narkisos, red; mantle over legs modelled in brown-reds and pinks with black shadow and light pink highlights; fragment of mantle over knee to left has traces of orange glass; staff, light yellow glass with black shadow changing to green-brown at top. Rock: black, and greys warmed by an infusion of brown. Fountain-head in shape of animal head: collar, green and yellow glass with white highlights and shadows black with touches of dark blue glass; head, light pink changing to brown and violet-red with orange glass in eye and mouth; streams of water, white. Reflection in pool, dark and light grey-green touched with pale violet, yellow, and white; water of pool shows traces of dark grey-green and glass in turquoise blue, grey-blue, and dark blue. Eros: wings, violet and dark grey-green shadow changing to light grey-green, with white and pale orange-yellow at top; Eros, modelled in violet and violet-pinks; hair, dark and light violet with streaks of pale yellow and brown; cloak at back, violet and grey with pink outline over shoulder; in front, brown with black shadow; bow, black with touch of violet-red and grey-brown; touch, violet, grey-brown, white, with flames of red-violet, violet, and glass in green and orange. Tree in greys, grey-greens, yellow-greens, and pale grey-browns. Landscape background in greys with a few trees dark grey-green; foreground in violet and violet-pinks.
