Room 2. "Narkisos"Border: Ground: white. Surround: Small single crenellations widely spaced alternately in blue and black limestone red terracotta tesserae; they are doubled at the corners. Border: 4 rows of red terracotta. Field: Ground: white. Geometrical Pattern: Filling almost the lower half of the composition and extending to the right to the left of the pictorial square in a large area enclosed by a double row of blue-black tesserae and filled by a diaper pattern of diamonds formed by a single row of red terracotta tesserae on the center of each diamond is a large crosslet alternately in blue-black limestone and in red. Terracotta with four yellow limestone tesserae forming the center. Pictorial square: Border: Blue-black crenellation on a yellow ground; red meander formed by 2 rows of red terracotta enclosing alternately red terracotta rectangles, blue black rectangles with yellow limestone centers; at the corners the rectangles change to squares; the whole meander is enclosed between bands composed of 3 rows of red terracotta tesserae; yellow crenellation on blue-black ground. The pool in the lower right corner is composed of gray, reddish-gray, and light grey-green limestone and of 2 tones of light blue glass, one of high, and one of low intensity. Narkisos' reflection is skillfully given in gray and grayish-violet with highlights in white. At the right of the composition is a pillar in reddish-gray shading into violet-gray, with a highlight on the left in yellowish-gray. From its base springs a tree composed of grayish-violet and the same yellowish-gray. The background between these objects and the central figure of Narkisos is filled in with a light gray. The left side of the composition is similarly shadowed in various areas of gray with one area of a dull greenish-gray at the upper left.
