Description

5th C. Marble Capital Fragment. Badly worn, but once moderately well cut, this fragment is of a fairly good grade of white marble.
h .208; base d .15; top d .21 approximately
This capital fragment was evidently reused for the top rim has been badly broken. Two wide bands of herringbone in relief side by side are on either side while between them on only one side is a conventionalized tree motif. There is a band in width .027 at the base. The relief is deeply cut. The base is also badly chipped.
Total preserved h. about 0.21.
Flower pot.
Architecture?
N.B. Reused as mortar?
V.A.
A flower pot (?) Top of rim broken all around. Inside, it is conically carved making a straight line in section (approxim). At one side, out of center, there is a hole drilled thru the bottom and reaches the inside, most probably to let the excess water run out. Presumably, one part from the base is broken, this leaving a bigger opening. (diam of drill hole = 0.011 and 0.065 deep, from base)
On the outside there is a stylized tree surrounded by double wheat ears a slight distance from the tree. The tree and the wheat ears are in high relief. (0.01) The decoration is only on half the circumf. The h of relief is not constant but varies from (0.005 - 0.01)
On one side there is lot of lime deposit from infiltration.
Inside, the cone is not exactly on axis with the pot but slightly out of center. The "weeping" hole seems to be of the slot type as there seems to be a straight - not accidental - surface at "A".
