University Hall

University Hall

William Appleton Potter and Robert Henderson Robertson, 1875-1876 (1916)

University Hall, originally the University Hotel, was designed by architects William Appleton Potter and Robert H. Robertson in 1875. Potter also designed Alexander Hall and Chancellor Green, two buildings that remain on Princeton’s campus today. The University Hotel was a High Victorian Gothic building as exhibited by its variety of window styles, irregular roof design, polychromatic brickwork and wooden veranda around the bottom. In 1883, Princeton purchased the hotel and renamed it University Hall. Afterward, the building became dormitories for Princeton undergraduates as well as a bank, a telegraph office, and a space for social events. The University Hall was demolished on June 16, 1916 to create space for the Collegiate Gothic buildings that are now part of Rockefeller and Mathey Colleges.
