Palmer Memorial Stadium

Palmer Memorial Stadium

Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, 1914 (1997)

Designed by celebrated architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, Palmer Memorial Stadium was constructed from reinforced concrete, incorporating a mix of intercollegiate gothic ornamentation and the classical Greek horseshoe plan. Financed by Edgar Palmer ’03, the stadium was named after his father, Stephen S. Palmer. Opened in 1914 and torn down in 1996, the stadium, which seated 45,000, hosted the likes of Princeton football legend and Heisman trophy winner Dick Kazmaier, as well as world renowned Olympians like Jesse Owens and Lynn Jennings. Although the stadium was replaced in 1997 by what is now Princeton Stadium, it has undoubtedly left a lasting mark on the University’s community and legacy.
