Old Gymnasium

Old Gymnasium

Cope and Stewardson, 1901-1903 (1944)

The Old Gymnasium was a home to all Princeton varsity athletic teams. The gymnasium hosted the varsity games, matches and practices for each team. It also housed 14 athletic murals that were painted by noted artists, athletic momentos, trophies, and a 2,500-volume library of sports and medicine. On May 24th, 1944, a fire broke out at 2:45 AM, causing the Gym to burn down and collapse. The Old Gymnasium had unique architectural features such as medieval-style arches and buttresses. The Old Gym is replaced by still-standing Dillon Gymnasium, now home to Princeton’s sports and recreational center.
