Marquand Chapel

Marquand Chapel

Richard Morris Hunt, 1881-1882 (1920)

Marquand Chapel was designed by the architect Richard Morris Hunt in 1882. The building was commissioned by Princeton University and funded by Henry Marquand. Located where the Princeton University Chapel stands today, Marquand Chapel accommodated students and guests attending religious services and university-related events, with a seating capacity of 1,000. Made from slate and brownstone, the building featured a large open nave filled with pews and a small choir at one end. The chapel additionally had a magnificent set of stained-glass memorial windows with Biblical inscriptions. The building was destroyed by fire in 1920. It was replaced by the Princeton University Chapel in 1928, built with a significantly larger nave and choir to accommodate a growing student body.
