John C. Green School of Science

William Appleton Potter, 1872-1873 (1928)

The John C. Green School of Science, funded by John Cleve Green, was built in 1873 as the first Science and Engineering building at the College of New Jersey (present day Princeton University), which had previously been a humanities-inclined college. William Appleton Potter, the head architect, designed the graceful High Victorian Gothic style building that stood in the same spot as the present-day Firestone Library. In 1877,the tower seen in the photo was designed and added by Edward D. Lindsey. In November 1928, a few months after the opening of the School of Engineering, the building burned down.
