Butler College

Hugh Stubbins, 1962-1964 (2007)

These buildings, 1940, 1941, and 1942 Hall, were central dormitories of Butler College. They were donated by their respective classes in 1964 to accommodate an influx of new students. The architect Hugh Stubbins designed 1940, 1941, and 1942 Hall to reinterpret Princeton’s signature Collegiate Gothic style in a modern setting. Unfortunately, the dormitories were widely regarded as ugly and uncomfortable by inhabitants and visitors alike—and built “the cheap way,” according to former University President Bob Goheen. In 2007, the University decided to demolish rather than renovate the dormitories.
